Jayapura, Jubi – Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) Papua has officially scheduled its Provincial Sports Conference (Musorprov) for June 5–6, 2026. The highest decision-making forum of the provincial sports organization is set to take place in Jayapura.

The main agenda of this year’s Musorprov will be the election of the Chairperson and executive board of KONI Papua for the 2026–2030 term. In addition to the leadership transition, the forum is also expected to formulate fundamental policies and long-term strategic programs related to sports development and athletic achievement in Papua Province.

KONI Papua Chairperson Kenius Kogoya said the decision on the schedule was made following internal evaluations and intensive coordination with the central board of KONI.
“We have held internal meetings and coordinated with the central KONI board. We will hold the Musorprov in early June, specifically on June 5 and 6,” Kogoya told reporters while accompanied by KONI Papua officials in Jayapura on Wednesday (27/5/2026).

According to Kogoya, holding the Musorprov in the near future is a crucial tactical step to ensure the continuity of Papua’s sporting achievements. The accelerated timeline is intended to give the incoming management sufficient time to prepare athletes for the National Sports Week (PON) pre-qualification rounds, scheduled to take place in mid-to-late 2027.

The long-term goal, he said, is to ensure Papua’s full readiness for the 22nd National Sports Week (PON XXII), which will be jointly hosted by Nusa Tenggara Barat and Nusa Tenggara Timur.

“The Musorprov is being held with several considerations, especially because the timeline toward the PON pre-qualification and the PON itself is getting closer. This agenda is important so that the new KONI management will have enough time to prepare athletes for the 2027 pre-qualification rounds and the 2028 PON XXII in NTT-NTB,” Kogoya explained.

The organizational move has also reportedly received approval from the provincial government, which serves as a major supporter of regional sports policy and funding. Kogoya added that KONI Papua has formally communicated with the Papua provincial administration to ensure the leadership transition process runs smoothly.

“We have informed the regional government, particularly the Governor, and the Governor has approved the implementation on June 5 and 6, 2026,” he said.

To ensure legal certainty and transparency in the election process, the Musorprov organizing committee and the chairperson candidate selection committee have officially been formed and have begun carrying out their duties. Kogoya stated that technical regulations and candidate requirements will soon be announced publicly.

“The selection committee has started working and will soon provide the public with technical details such as schedules and candidate requirements. The main point is that the Musorprov will be held on June 5–6, 2026, next month,” he emphasized.

On the same occasion, KONI Papua Secretary General George Weyasu outlined the legal basis for the committee’s formation. Weyasu said the composition of the selection and screening committee was decided collectively during the KONI Papua Provincial Working Meeting (Rakerprov) held in Jayapura on April 16, 2026.

Based on the mandate from the meeting, the committee consists of representatives from the provincial KONI board, district-level administrators, and provincial sports associations. Those appointed are Henky Sawaki, Benny Jensenem, Otniel Deda, Korneles Yanuaring, and Thelma Numberi.

“They were appointed during the April working meeting, while the Musorprov organizing committee has also been established. The committee chairperson is Ayub Woisiri,” Weyasu explained.

Following the Musorprov, the new leadership will immediately face several major challenges. Key national strategic agendas ahead of PON XXII include accelerating Papua’s athlete preparations for the pre-qualification rounds, improving organizational management among provincial sports associations, and restructuring athlete development programs.
