Jayapura, Jubi – Papua province is hosting Indonesia’s national commemoration of World Press Freedom Day this year, with a series of events taking place in Jayapura on May 4–5, 2026.
The commemoration brings together journalists and media organizations from across the country under the theme “Quality Journalism for a Peaceful and Just Indonesia.” Students, youth, and the wider public are also taking part in a range of activities, including national seminars, workshops, training sessions, and talk shows.
The event was opened by the Governor of Papua, Mathius Fakhiri.
Organizing committee chair Jean Bisay said the event is usually held in Jakarta, but this year Papua was chosen as the national host.
“This may be the first time the commemoration is held outside Jakarta, and Papua has been given the opportunity to host World Press Freedom Day at the national level,” Bisay said during the opening ceremony at the Papua Governor’s Office on Monday (May 4).
The Editor-in-Chief of Jubi also expressed appreciation to the Papua provincial government and all parties involved for supporting the event.
“We thank all stakeholders and the committee members who have worked hard to make this celebration in Papua possible,” he added.
Meanwhile, representative of the Publisher Rights Committee, Suprapto Sastro Atmojo, said Papua was chosen to emphasize that Indonesia extends far beyond Jakarta.
“Indonesia is not just Jakarta. It includes Papua, Aceh, Ambon, and all regions from Sabang to Merauke. Holding national events outside Jakarta helps reflect that reality,” he said.
Suprapto also cited a statement by Pope Leo XIV on peace, describing it not merely as the absence of war, but as a sacred gift rooted in justice, dialogue, and compassion.
He linked this perspective to challenges in the media industry, particularly the relationship between digital platforms and news organizations.
“In the context of the press industry, justice must be emphasized—especially in the relationship between digital platforms and media companies, where many feel there is inequality,” he said.
He added that this year’s theme is not only about promoting peace and justice in society, but also about ensuring fairness for media organizations in Indonesia—so that both values can genuinely be realized nationwide. (*)
