Tambrauw civilian killing: YY named suspect, seven placed on wanted list

Jayapura, Jubi – The Southwest Papua Regional Police (Polda Papua Barat Daya) have named a man identified by the initials YY as a suspect in connection with the killing of a civilian in Bamusbama District, Tambrauw Regency, Southwest Papua. Police have also released the names of seven individuals now listed as wanted (DPO).

The announcement was made by Head of Public Relations of Southwest Papua Police, Kompol Jenny Setya Agustin Hengkelare, during a press conference at the regional police headquarters on Wednesday (March 25, 2026).

Jenny explained that YY was named a suspect following an in-depth investigation into the possession of two rounds of 5.56 mm ammunition and one handheld radio (HT), on Monday (March 23, 2026).

“Effective March 23, 2026, YY has been officially designated as a suspect and, since early Tuesday morning, has been placed in custody at the Sorong Police detention center in Aimas,” she said.

YY is suspected of violating Article 1(1) of Emergency Law No. 12 of 1951 or Article 189(b) of Law No. 1 of 2023 (Criminal Code), related to unlawful possession of firearm ammunition.

Based on the examination of 12 witnesses who had previously been detained, Tambrauw Police have identified several individuals suspected of involvement in the killing of civilians on March 8 and March 16, 2026.

The seven individuals currently listed as wanted are: Gidion Yesnath, Yudas Yesyan, Tobias Yekwam, Maxiumus Yesyan, Ateng Yekwam, Yohanis Yeblo, and Silas Yesnath.

Meanwhile, four witnesses identified as TY, MY, WY, and PY have been returned to their families under legal supervision on Tuesday (March 24, 2026).

According to him, following the incidents, the Tambrauw Police Chief, along with stakeholders from the Indonesian military (TNI) and the Tambrauw Regency government, have conducted a series of internal meetings aimed at regional reconciliation.

Authorities have urged residents of Tambrauw to remain calm and continue their daily activities as usual.

“We ask the public to remain vigilant. Police and military personnel are still on standby at security posts to provide services and ensure public safety,” Jenny said.

Regarding the recent attack on a TNI post in Sori Village, Maybrat Regency, on March 22—which resulted in the deaths of two Indonesian Navy personnel—the Southwest Papua Police stated that further information would be coordinated through TNI public relations.

Previously, the West Papua National Liberation Army – Free Papua Movement (TPNPB-OPM) group had claimed responsibility for a series of attacks in both Tambrauw and Maybrat.
