Shooting in the Freeport mining area and Korowai runway, Papua, three people killed

Jayapura, Jubi – The shooting at Mile 50, the mining area of PT. Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) on Wednesday (February 11, 2026) was confirmed by the XVII Cenderawasih Military Command. Colonel Tri Purwanto, the spokesperson for the XVII Cenderawasih Military Command, stated in a written statement that an Armed Criminal Group (KKB) had fired upon a vehicle passing through Mile 50 in Tembagapura, Mimika Regency, resulting three people being shot.

“It is true that a shooting incident occurred at KM 50 in the PT. Freeport Indonesia area in Tembagapura, and currently all victims have been evacuated to receive optimal medical treatment,” said Colonel Tri Purwanto in his statement.

In that incident, one TNI personnel from Kodim 1710/Mimika (Serka AK) was reported dead. His colleague, Sertu H, was injured and suffered bleeding from the nose. HR, a worker at PT Freeport Indonesia, was reportedly shot during the incident and is currently receiving medical treatment.

Previously, PTFI had already provided confirmation regarding this shooting incident.

“We received a report from government security officials regarding a shooting incident that occurred on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at around 3:00 p.m. Papua Time at Mile Post 50, the main road to Tembagapura. Access to the main road to Tembagapura is temporarily closed,” said Katri Krisna, VP of Corporate Communications of PT Freeport Indonesia, in an official statement received by Jubi on Wednesday (February 11, 2006).

TPNPB claimed responsibility for the shooting

Meanwhile, Sebby Sambom, spokesperson for the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB) of the Free Papua Movement (OPM), confirmed that TPNPB forces from Tembagapura and Timika were responsible for the shooting of three Indonesian military personnel in the PTFI mining area (Mile 50). In addition to shooting TNI members, the TPNPB also seized two SS2 weapons, two magazines, and 50 rounds of ammunition, which are now TPNPB assets.

Separately, Papua police spokesman Cahyo Sukarnito said to Reuters, a pilot and co-pilot of a small commercial Smart Air plane died after assailants opened fire on the aircraft as it landed at Korowai airport in Boven Digoel, South Papua province, on Wednesday (11/2/2026) morning. The plane was carrying 13 passengers in addition to the two pilots.

When the shooting began, the pilots and passengers left the plane and fled into a nearby forest, he said. The pilot and co-pilot were killed, but all passengers were unharmed.
