Manokwari, Jubi – The West Papua Independent Student Forum (FIM WP) in Manokwari, West Papua, is set to stage a demonstration on April 7, 2026, to mark the anniversary of the initial signing of PT Freeport’s Contract of Work. The action, themed “Shut Down Freeport and Grant the Right to Self-Determination,” will also take place in several other cities across Papua.
FIM WP Manokwari coordinator Nebot Widigipa said the mobilization follows an internal decision by the national leadership of FIM West Papua. He called on student groups, Cipayung organizations, civil society groups, and the wider community in Manokwari to take part in the planned action.
“The national action by FIM WP coincides with April 7, 1967, when Indonesia, the United States and their allies signed the first Contract of Work with PT Freeport without involving Indigenous Papuans as a customary landowner,” Wigidipa said on Sunday, April 5, 2026.
He emphasized that the protest would be conducted peacefully, with participants voicing demands aligned with the theme, including the closure of PT Freeport and the recognition of Papuans’ right to self-determination. (*)
